Technical Information

ZUM first stormed the UK in 2001 with its stunning fusion combining the fire and brilliance of Eastern European gypsy fiddle music with the hot-blooded passion of Argentinean tango.  Since then the band has enjoyed sold out tours and performances at major music festivals throughout the UK and Europe, including five sold out shows at the South Bank in London.

ZUM performs Nuevo Tango masterpieces by Astor Piazzolla and music from the golden era of tango, alongside addictive traditional gypsy melodies and dazzling virtuoso fiddling.  In addition to mirroring the enduring sounds of the past, ZUM blends sophisticated threads of jazz with gypsy, celtic, salsa, bluegrass, klezmer, Arabic, calypso, and tango to create a stunning original sound.

Magical tenderness and haunting, intoxicating harmonies, incredible explosions of sound and rhythmic power…ZUM.

The Gypsy-Tango Phenomenon

Lecture-Demonstration
Length: 60-90 min depending on the age range

ZUM is the original Gypsy Tango band – their music is a stunning fusion of eastern European gypsy fiddle music and hot-blooded Argentinean Tango.  In this workshop, ZUM explores the inherent similarities of these seemingly disparate forms and tracks their rise from the back-streets of Eastern Europe and the bordellos of South America to become an established part of the concert hall repertoire in the 21st century.  The workshop looks at where the music originated from, how it subsequently transformed into these two different forms and how each has developed over the course of time.

Gypsy Improvisation

Participants must be proficient to play simple tunes on any tuned instrument.
It is also best if there is not a great difference in the ability levels in the group.

Thrilling… fiery….flamboyant…stunning – just some of the words that can sum up a great gypsy fiddle solo.  Working with tunes specially written for this workshop, ZUM and their master fiddler, Adam Summerhayes, give an introduction to the art of improvision. Adam has spent a great deal of time in Eastern Europe listening and playing along some of the finest traditional gypsy fiddlers in the world.  Together the bands’ stunning jazz pianist, David Gordon, they explore its roots and development through jazz and beyond.

String Players’ Master-Classes

Participants: High School and College students

ZUM’s internationally acclaimed violinist, Adam Summerhayes, and cellist, Chris Grist, give individual master-classes on their own instruments and work together with chamber groups to give chamber music coaching.  Both players have performed chamber music at the highest level and work together in the celebrated London Concertante Chamber Ensemble.  They performed as concerto soloists and chamber musicians in more than 20 countries worldwide, performing for international festivals and performing arts series.  Their recordings and performances have garnered the highest praise from international publications such as The Strad: “An extraordinary unanimity to their playing.  Fine chamber musicians…the duet for violin and cello was quite exquisite.” And “Utterly compelling” BBC Music Magazine.

“Anyone for a Milonga?” – Tango Dancing

ZUM is respected worldwide as one of the finest components of Tango.  The band has been inspired by the finest tango musicians from Carlos Gardel, Rosendo Mendizabal, Juan de Dios Filiberto, Jacob Gade and the master of modern Argentinian Tango, Astor Piazzolla.  Using traditional tango, their take on the classics as well as original compositions by the band’s members, ZUM constantly delights tango dancers with their exciting sound, pumping rhythms and extraordinary energy.  ZUM offer their formidable talents to any willing Tango dancers to come and “milonga” with them.
