It
has been said that GARRY KRINSKY resembles a living cartoon with his
animated movement and non-stop energy. His theater experience is extensive.
Garry co-founded the Patchwork Players, and was an original member of both the
Boston Buffoons and the Wright Bros., a New England vaudeville troupe. Since
1978, Garry has brought his high energy and experience to thousands of schools,
theaters and festivals.
Since
its creation in 1995, Garry Krinsky’s acclaimed Toying with Science
program has toured across the U.S. and Canada to rave reviews. Toying with
Science, first commissioned by the Museum of Science in Boston, has been
performed at the Kennedy Center of Washington DC, Victoria Theatre of Dayton,
Civic Center of Greater Des Moines, Kravis Center, Broward Center, and Ruth
Eckerd Hall in Florida, the Broadway Center and Everett Theater in Washington,
the Markham Theatre in Ontario, and other theaters and festivals across the
United States. Garry has also had appearances on NBC’s Today Show and for
Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors.
Toying with Science is a fast-paced,
varied and dynamic program. It combines circus skills, mime, original music,
and audience involvement in the exploration of the scientific principles of
gravity, leverage, fulcrums, and simple machines. Garry and his audience
investigate basic scientific information and delve into the imaginations of
scientists who have played important roles in the exploration and discovery of
concepts that define our world. Garry brings a number of science-based toys to
life with motion, music, humor and insight. He grants audience members a chance
at stardom by inviting a few to join him on stage and participate in juggling or
balancing activities with his playful guidance. His original, up-beat songs
offer additional information on fulcrums, levers and basic mechanics. He
impresses upon his audience the idea that by mastering simple scientific
concepts, one can produce terrific results. For example, the ability to find the
center of gravity is demonstrated when he balances multiple ladders, topped with
a giant beach umbrella on his chin at the same time! As personable as he is
professional, Garry consistently dissolves the boundary between himself and the
audience, making for a truly unique experience.

Offered in conjunction with performances of Toying With Science, each
workshop provides a unique learning and interactive experience for the
participants. Garry Krinsky’s non-competitive approach puts everyone at ease and
helps to build self-esteem. Garry encourages participants to utilize their
imaginations.
Toying With Science Workshop
This
workshop allows students to embark on a hands-on exploration of several
scientific principles, including: center of gravity, air-resistance, and
motion. Students will first learn a series of progressive exercises, developed
by Garry Krinsky to teach them how to balance and manipulate peacock feathers.
Students learn to juggle at their own pace by using scarves, which trap air and
slow down the pull of gravity. Individual attention ensures that each student
gets the chance to learn juggling patterns and master the motions. Through these
exercises, the students will learn about science while having a great deal of
fun. Students will investigate human motion by learning some basic fundamentals
of mime.
Tech
Requirements:
-
Students should dress comfortably in clothes that do not inhibit movement.
-
The space should have at least 10 feet of ceiling clearance.
-
An indoor space, large enough to allow the entire group to move around.
Notes:
-
Preferably, workshops should follow a performance of Toying With Science,
so that students can apply and build on what they've learned from this
presentation. If this is not possible, the workshops are still quite
valuable, and the concluding performance of Toying With Science acts
to reinforce what the workshop participants learned.
-
Residency programs can also be designed to have students conduct a short
presentation at its conclusion, although the focus is more on the process of
exploration than creating a finished product.
Teacher Workshop
Teacher workshops are interactive and explore how students can learn about
scientific principles by using some of the exercises in the above workshops.
