Biography

VIVER BRASIL

VIVER BRASIL, founded in Los Angeles in 1997 by Artistic Director Linda Yudin and Co-Director/Choreographer/Musician Luiz Badaró, is rooted in the traditional and contemporary forms and techniques of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, and embodies the beautiful and complex stories of the orixás, African sacred energies of Afro-Brazilian culture. Viver Brasil's innovative stage presentations explore Brazil's racial, social and political history, and are living extensions of the history of Afro-Brazilian dance and music on stage, the Candomblé mythological complex, samba traditions and Bahian carnival. Viver Brasil's repertory reflects artistic excellence, rigorous research and continuous dialogue with living elder masters in Bahia and younger virtuoso musicians, dancers and choreographers. Viver Brasil’s company members have studied extensively in Salvador, Bahia (Los Angeles’ sister city).

Viver Brasil has performed at major venues in its hometown of Los Angeles, including the Hollywood Bowl, Walt Disney Concert Hall and eight annual concerts at the Ford Amphitheatre and scores of festivals throughout southern and northern California. In 2007, Viver Brasil performed before sold-out houses during a 10 city tour of New Mexico, including the National Hispanic Cultural Center and the Lensic Auditorium. In 2009, the company performed in Guadalajara, Mexico. In 2010, the company embarked on its first national tour to 15 cities through the southwest, eastern seaboard and midwest with generous support from the National Dance Project.

Viver Brasil was awarded the prestigious Lester Horton Dance Award for best world dance company performance in 2010, best achievement in music for dance in 2009 and nominated in the areas of best female and male performance, and costume design. Viver Brasil’s directors were awarded excellence in teaching awards in 2009.

Viver Brasil is committed to educating the youth in its community and annually performs to thousands of youth in the Los Angeles and Ventura County communities and conducts residencies at a variety of arts center, colleges and universities. Additionally Viver Brasil teaches adults in the community and conducts on-going classes to the Downtown Womens Center, a center for homeless women. The company also sponsors an annual Afro-Brazilian dance and music immersion travel program to Salvador, Bahia. Viver Brasil recently created the Viver Brasil Institute to encourage intensive study of Afro-Brazilian dance and music in Los Angeles with master Brazilian artists from Salvador, Bahia.
