Biography

Chicago City Limits

Chicago City Limits is New York City’s legendary improv comedy show. Founded in Chicago in 1977 by actors participating in the Second City workshops, the group relocated to New York in 1980 and began an Off-Broadway run of over 8,500 performances. Through the years, the company has gotten rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, most recently receiving the 2008 Award for Best Comedy Group by the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs (MAC).

The Chicago City Limits show combines sketch comedy, musical theater and audience-inspired improvisations. The majority of the show is created on the spot from suggestions called out by audience members. Each performance is a unique collaboration between actors and audience—no two shows are alike. Sketches are as fresh as today’s headlines, taking aim at the faces, places and events of the day.

Chicago City Limits has made dozens of TV appearances as well, including stints on Comedy Central, HBO, CNN, TBS, The Today Show, The McLaughlin Group, The Joan Rivers Show, and The Jackie Mason Show. The group also was featured in its own TV news series, Reel News. Guest performers who have appeared with Chicago City Limits include Robin Williams, Bill Irwin, Rita Rudner & Bret Butler.

The Chicago City Limits National Touring Company was established when the group began its New York City run, and over the years has performed at such diverse venues as Lincoln Center, The Smithsonian Institute, SuperBowl XXIX, and hundreds of colleges and regional theaters across the country.

In addition to highly interactive and customized shows, Chicago City Limits also offers a complete improv training program, conducting classes and residencies designed for people of all ages and skill levels. Specialized workshops—including “Comedy in the Workplace,” “Teambuilding,” and “Diversity”— are also available, and are ideal events for small groups.
